Fall Into Good Home Maintenance by Anisa Dominguez, Architectural Standards Manager A S SUMMER WINDS DOWN AND COOLER, WETTER weather approaches, fall is a great time to take a closer look at your home’s exterior. A little maintenance now can help prevent bigger—and more expensive—problems later. PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE RAIN Before the first big storm arrives, take a walk around your property and look for areas that may need attention. Check your roof, gutters, and downspouts for leaves, debris, or signs of damage. Make sure water can drain away from your home and keep an eye out for standing water or areas where drainage may be a concern. It’s also a good time to inspect fences, decks, gates, siding, and other exterior wood for dry rot, deterioration, or loose components. Check the caulking around windows and doors and touch up areas where paint is peeling or wood is exposed. DON’T LET SMALL REPAIRS BECOME BIG PROBLEMS Those little issues that are easy to overlook can become much more noticeable after a season of rain. A loose fence board, cracked caulking, deteriorating trim, or damaged exterior surface is much easier to address before it becomes a larger repair. Fall is also a good time to look at your landscaping. Keep trees and branches properly trimmed, particularly where they could come into contact with your home, roof, or other structures. A LITTLE CURB APPEAL GOES A LONG WAY Fall is also a wonderful time to freshen up the appearance of your home. Take a look at your front door, mailbox, house numbers, exterior lighting, garage door, and landscaping. A little maintenance or an approved update can make a big difference in your home’s curb appeal.

THINK AHEAD FOR WINTER The best time to prepare your home for winter is before winter arrives. Taking care of maintenance, planning improvement projects early, and addressing architectural requirements in advance will help keep your home looking its best—and help you enjoy the season with fewer surprises. A little preparation now can save a lot of time, money, and headaches later! PLANNING A PROJECT? START HERE! If you’re considering painting, replacing a garage door, updating a fence or gate, making exterior repairs, or tackling another exterior home improvement project, remember to check the Community Architectural Rules and your Project Architectural Rules before you begin. Many exterior changes require an Architectural Application and approval before work starts. Even projects that may seem minor can have specific requirements regarding materials, colors, placement, or design. Planning ahead can help prevent delays, avoid costly changes, and ensure your project meets the community’s architectural standards. Questions? We’re Here to Help!
